We are all becoming increasingly aware that the world we live in is precious, and so in order to encourage global awareness and appreciation of our environment, we decided to share with you a much loved meditation inspired by Julian of Norwich.
Julian of Norwich was a 14th century Christian mystic who had a series of religious visions while on her death bed at the age of 30. Wonderfully, she survived and dedicated the rest of her life to meditating on what truth had been revealed to her in her visions. The most famous of these was the revelation of the hazelnut:
“And in this he showed me a little thing, the quantity of a hazel nut, lying in the palm of my hand, as it seemed. And it was as round as any ball. I looked upon it with the eye of my understanding, and thought, ‘What may this be?’ And it was answered generally thus, ‘It is all that is made.’ I marvelled how it might last, for I thought it might suddenly have fallen to nothing for littleness. And I was answered in my understanding: It lasts and ever shall, for God loves it. And so have all things their beginning by the love of God.”
This vision has since been transformed into a beautiful meditation to send love and compassion to mother earth. If you would like to do this meditation, you will need a small green tumble stone crystal and however long you can spare! We recommend about fifteen minutes.
Begin by sitting in a comfortable position and taking some deep, calming breaths. Close your eyes. Cradle the crystal gently in your palm and visualise a peaceful green light rising up from the earth and into your feet. With each inhalation, imagine the green light rising higher up your body; with each exhalation, feel more peaceful and relaxed. Continue until your whole body is bathed in the gentle green light.
Now, picture the planet as it must be seen from space. Allow yourself to feel the awe of it: everyone you have ever loved has walked that green earth. How many billions of people laugh and live across the globe; how many dawns and storms the world has seen. Visualise the Earth gently, softly reducing in size. Feel the crystal you hold in your hand and imagine that its size and weight is now that of the earth, that you cradle the globe in the palm of your hand.
How fragile the Earth is! How delicate and precious and dear. Picture the green light that surrounds you surrounding the planet, soaking into it. Send peaceful love through the light and into the globe.
Spend the majority of your meditation in this place of loving serenity. When you are ready, visualise the size of the planet increasing to its usual, awesome size – only this time, imagine it is still surrounded in that beautiful green light.
Become aware of your body and your breath once more. With each inhalation, feel invigorated and energised; with each exhalation, imagine the green light lowering down your body and finally soaking into the earth.
Open your eyes.
Carry the crystal in your pocket for the remainder of the day, and each time you see or touch it, once more visualise that green light around the earth.
To take this meditation one step further, do something kind for the planet. Set up a recycling bin in your workplace and take responsibility for it. Plant indigenous flowers that will feed the birds and bees in your garden (lavender is always a good choice). Scatter wildflower seeds in a scrubby patch of earth you pass each day on your commute. Do something small and simple and kind for this wonderful world we call our home.
