The Way to Nirvana symbolises the path to the state of liberation and enlightenment, in which one is able to realise the way out of the endless cycle of death, birth and rebirth.
Beginning at the start of the path in the lower right of the thangka, a monk is chasing, binding, leading and subduing an elephant whose colour progresses from black to white. The elephant represents the mind and its black colour the mental defilement a which need to be purified.
The monkey represents distraction, scattered thoughts and mental agitation. The hare which appears riding on the back of the elephant represents mental sluggishness.
As the monk progresses along the path, the mind becomes more and more purified, until at the end path single – pointed concentration is attained and the ‘purified elephant’ of the mind is now completely submissive.
The flying monk represents bodily bliss and his riding in the elephant, mental bliss, as he rides the elephant triumphantly across the rainbow, wielding the flaming sword of perfect insight having attained the flame of clear understanding and mindfulness.
At last, the state of enlightenment, or nirvana is reached and the knowledge of the ultimate reality of all phenomena, or Absolute Truth is revealed.
